Nice to see you posting again.

Sorry about not showing. When Larry called me Sunday night and said he wasn't running Monday morning I just assumed no morning run. Since I was planning on running with Tom and maybe Cory and Nathan at lunchtime, I skipped it. It's probably good I didn't show. You seem to like to push the pace when it's just you and I, which Tom also did some during the lunch run. I don't think I could have handled both runs. I'll try to make it out on Wednesday morning.

Neither Larry nor Paul showed this morning. Ran through Orem along 4oo East and came back along Main. I was better prepared for the cold and had my ipod helping me along. Ran about an 8:20 pace and didn't feel good nor bad, just tired from not enough sleep. I hope to get an additional run in this evening but the prospects aren't looking too good.

I did a 12+ mile run with Kevin and Wayne this morning. Larry had a chest cold but still came out and ran a few miles with us and then turned back. We headed south through Orem, over to University Ave, south to the country club, then back north up University Ave to Orem 800 North then back up through Orem to home.

We ran the 12.25 miles in 1:43:20 (8:27/mi). We started out at about a 9:15/mi pace, ran most of the run right around 8:30/mi, then finished with 1.5 miles at about 8:00/mi and then the final mile at 7:18/mi.

I was having a hard time hanging with Paul and Wayne the last few miles. I attribute that to two things: lack of miles and lack of GU and Gatorade.

Paul didn'Thx - Kevin show at 7:30am as we had agreed and due to the actively falling snow/slush, I did not feel like running outside solo. Decided to go to BYU but didn't make it over till around 8:25. Ran 4 miles at 7:50 pace at the BYU track. I had planned on running 8 miles but was kicked off the track at 9am by the BYU track team.

The traffic was light probably due to Pres. Day holiday

Maybe I can pick up a few miles later in the day with my girls.

Sorry, Kevin. When I saw all the new snow, with more coming down, I just assumed the run was off. I didn't even think about going to the indoor track. That would have been fun. I just crawled back into bed. That was enjoyable, too, but I should have called.

Paul:

I believe the key to your improvement in the marathon is getting out on days like this. There is a big difference between 40 miles a week once in a while and 60 miles a week consistently. And it is next to impossible to run 60 miles a week consistently unless running is your full-time job, or unless you get out in any weather.

From Paul T on Wed, Feb 21, 2007 at 19:26:17

Sasha, Thank you for your advice. It is always welcome, and I'm sure you're right that 60 mile weeks would improve my marathon time. I'm just not certain it would improve my life right now. Running is a key part of my lifestyle, but it is not my life. I have a wife, six children, a job, church calling, etc., all of which have (or should have) a higher priority than improving my marathon time. (I've tried getting my family to run with me, but without success.) Finding time to run is a balancing act that I take a day or week at a time. I usually have to do it at 5:30-5:45am or during my lunch hour at work. As for running in bad weather, I've done it plenty. In this case, I considered the slushy, slippery footing, and the falling snow making it difficult to see through my glasses. I also figured it wouldn't last, and that it was a holiday and I would probably have time later in the day to get my run in. As it turns out, our family plans kept changing and I ended up missing my run, much to my disappointment. I guess I'm defending myself because I don't want you to get the wrong idea about me. I do not look for excuses to not run. I love running! My 18 year old son thinks I'm addicted to it. Not quite yet, I don't think, but it has and continues to bless my life physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually. I will continue to find as much time as I can to run, but in moderation and in balance with the rest of my life. Please continue to offer advice as you see fit. It is very helpful. Thanks, Paul

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Feb 23, 2007 at 08:59:37

Paul:

60 miles a week is very doable even with extremely busy schedules as far as the time is concerned. Very few people will schedule anything that you have to be at before 7:00 am. That means if you get up at 5:00 am, that alone will give enough time for 10 miles. Additionally, you get a chance to run during lunch on occasion.

That said, it would probably not be wise for you to start running 10 miles a day in single workouts right now. However, a healthy training volume is probably 7 miles a day 5 days a week with one long run of 12 miles. I cannot overemphasize the importance of building a habit of not skipping days for reasons not related to injuries or true overtraining. Especially when your schedule is busy. It makes it easy to justify here a little and there a little. The consequences are dismal. 2 Nephi 26:22 - "he leadeth them by the neck with a flaxen cord, until he bindeth them with his strong cords forever"

While there are many things that should have a higher priority than running, this should not be taken as an excuse to do less than your honest best in your training given the constraints of other responsibilities. I am thinking of President Hinckley's quote: "do your best, but make it your very best".

Try making a realistic minimum plan at the beginning of each week on what you are going to do, realistic enough that you can commit to it 100%. Then stick to it even when life throws a wrench in your plans, even if it means running at 4:00 AM or 10:00 PM.

From Paul T on Fri, Feb 23, 2007 at 09:51:23

You make some good points Sasha. I appreciate your personal interest in my training and your sage advice. Thanks.

Got out with Paul and we ran through Orem for a little over 6 miles. Our pace started slow. It picked up a little the last couple of miles, but neither of us felt very fast this morning. We averaged 8:17/mi overall, warming up a mile or so at around an 8:50 pace, averaging around 8:20 for most of the run, and ending at 7:36/mi.

Felt pretty good throughout, though the first two miles were tough as I was waking up. Got to bed at 1am and 5:30am comes early.

 ******************

Got out on the mountain bike with Mark and his son, Matt for a night time ride with headlamps. We went up Dry Creek and over above the watertowers continuing up Provo Canyon until the mud got too thick and gooey. Was out for nearly two hours. Pace was rather brisk as there were a lot of hills and we were traveling at a pretty good pace. I imagine that this ride is easily the equivalent of 8 miles of hill running and I have added to my "running" total for today.

Ran with Larry and Wayne. Temps were in the low 20s. Ran along th canal into PG and then ran up to Battlecreek. We meandered down to Lindon City Park and then south to 12th North before heading out to the Cemetary Fields. Larry only wanted to run 6-7 miles, but Wayne and I talked him into almost 11. The pace was an easy 9 min per mile and it felt good.

In the morning I ran the normal Orem 400 E course with Paul. The weather phone said it was 21 degrees and I dressed well for that temperature. I was fine while we headed south. As soon as we turned back north, however, we realized that we had been running with a tailwind which was now a very cold headwind. My face got pretty cold (numb) but the rest of me was okay.

We took a few detours this morning. First we took a minor detour at 400 S when we headed west to go over to Main St. to go back north. We both were thinking we were on 400 N. 400 S does not intersect with Main St. When we saw State St. approaching we turned back and went north on 400 E as usual. At 800 N, we did go west to Main St. and stopped at Gold's Gym so I could use their bathroom. There sure seemed to be a lot of people there on the treadmills, etc. We then crossed over 800 N and made our way around the construction to get onto Main St. and head home. We ended up doing about 6.7 miles @ 8:23/mi. The first mile was @ 8:37/mi and the last mile was @ 7:45/mi.

Ran with Kerry and Paul in the afternoon. It was sunny and felt colder than I expected. The temperature was in the low 30's with a cold breeze at times. Kerry had a little stomach distress in the middle of the run.

We went a little over 13 miles and averaged 8:32/mi overall. After warming up we started out at about 8:13/mi for the next few miles. We gradually slowed as we turned north and headed uphill for a while. Kerry had stashed water and Gatorade at a couple of places, and we also stopped for a bio-break at Kohlers. I feel like we held a pretty good pace throughout the run, and we finished pretty strong, averaging 7:52/mi for last 2.2 miles.

Ran 5 miles on the BYU track at an average 7:25 pace. The first mile was at 7:50 and each mile therafter was between 7:10 and 7:20.

The Air Force ROTC was there and would merge onto the track in waves "racing" me for a lap or two each time. I had some good tunes on my ipod and the racing made it kind of fun even though I was working pretty hard.

Paul and I ran a variation on the normal Orem route this morning. We kept each other going at a pretty good pace and averaged 7:52/mi for 6.3 miles.

We ran down Main to 400 S, over to 400 E, down to Center, over to 800 E, up to 1600 N, then down to Main and home. After the hill on 8the East we did the first 1/2 mile of the downhill at 6:50/mi then averaged 6:30/mi for the second 1/2 mile, both of us finishing with a pretty strong kick.

We both felt like we had worked hard and felt very good about the run.

Hi Kevin,

This is your running blog at http://joecool.fastrunningblog.com.

I've missed you. I'm glad to hear you have been cleared by your doctor to start running again. I hope you'll be able to start logging some miles with me soon.

With my help it won't be long (but take it easy and don't try too much too soon) before you're back in shape and ready to attack that BQ time and then on to a sub-3:00 hour marathon.

I hear your neighbors Larry and Paul have been training well. I'm sure they would be thrilled to have you out running with them again.

I'm eager to get back to logging your miles. I hope to hear from you soon.

Well I'm back at the running blog. I have been running 2-3 times a week for a couple of months now since my doctor cleared me for running. In case you don't remember, I broke my femur last March after the Moab Half Marathon.

I was mountainbiking on the Slickrock trail and crashed right at the end of the trail. It was an impact fracture and broke into roughly 11 pieces high on my left leg. I have a 12 inch plate and some 9 titanium screws now but the bone has healed admirably. I am now trying to get my leg muscles back into shape. I have no restrictions from my doctor but have noticed that I still limp a bit beyond 3-4 miles or so of running.

At seven miles this was one of the longer runs I've done since the injury. The pace was moderate as Jo was with Larry and me. We ran along the canal in the snow and had an enjoyable time talking.

Temperature was in the mid 20s.

Today's run was an easy 5 miles on the BYU track with my two teenage girls. They can currently sprint faster than me, but I can still run farther than them. My pace today was 2 miles at a 10 min/mile pace, 2 miles at a 9-9:30 min/mil pace and one mile at about 7:45 min/mile. I was fairly tired at the end though I certainly could have gone a few additional miles if pressed.
